Part of the grand set of five (Benjapakee) This is a pyramid shaped clay amulet of a seated Buddha with slightly oversized head, broad and straight shoulders, seated with right hand touching the ground in victory. They are from chedis in Pitsanulok Province, south east of Sukhothai.
Votive tablets have been recovered from Wat Phra Buthachinarat, Wat Mahathat and terracotta tablets from Wat Nang Phya which are among the most sought after by collectors.
It was claimed that they were made by Queen Visutkasatri, the wife of King Mahadharmaraja and mother of King Naresuan some 500 years ago, as similar amulets were recovered from Wat Rajburana. Which the Queen had repaired during her reign. The wearers claim that these amulets provide them with great fortune and loving kindness.
Although amulets from these temples are extremely expensive you can still find original Nangphya amulets from lesser known temples at a fraction of the cost. A good example are some recently discovered pims at Wat Botongkum in the same province of Pitsanalok.
